Mortimer Corcoran was born in Myshall, County Carlow, Ireland in 1827. At the age of 22 he came to America landing in New York on
November 1,1849. He arrived in Cincinnati just a few months later, eleven days into 1850.
In 1854 he married a young, 17 year old, Elizabeth Murphy. Mortimer was ten years Elizabeth's senior. They were married for fourteen years and had five children. Sadly, Elizabeth died in 1868 at the very young age of 31.
Nine months later, Mortimer married his second wife, Anna Fennelon. Anna was two years Mortimer's senior. The two were married for fifteen years and had no children together. Anna died in 1883 at the age of 58.
Seven months later, Mortimer married his third wife, Jane Fennelon (Foley), a widower and the sister of Anna Fennelon, Mortimer's second wife. Marrying sisters, as we have come to learn, was not an uncommon practice back in those days. Jane and Mortimer had no children together. They were married for twenty-six years when Mortimer died in 1909. Anna outlived Mortimer by 16 years dying in 1925 at the ripe old age of 92.
Although Mortimer does not hold the family record for the most marriages, he does however have the distinction of being the only family member to have married sisters.
